Potty training and pants.

Anyone having any luck with potty training and pants. So my lil is amazing if he is totally naked from waist below. When he wears pants or trousers he is not great. We tried for the first time at nursery today and they said he went through all his spare clothes and didn’t seem to know when he needed it but when we are at home he’s great. I feel a bit sad about it because I know he can do it or am I doing something wrong

How long has it been since you stopped using nappies? It can take weeks before they actively tell you they need to go. Even longer for nursery as they are busy and there’s so much going on. Apparently it is helpful for them to go from naked to loose trouser bottoms, as pants can feel snug like a nappy and give them a false sense of security - but some nurseries won’t allow trousers only. If it’s very new, it would definitely be worth asking your nursery to take him periodically to the toilet. It doesn’t sound like they’re doing that, but it seems odd that they wouldn’t.

@Liz it’s been about 3 weeks now. Not consistently everyday as when we go out once or twice a week I put nappies on him. Nursery did say they kept offering him but I still seem unsure but then also as he is playing in nursery and there’s lot of children could it be that. I might ask them if they can just put him in just loose bottoms. The person I spoke to today was also new so in the morning I’m going to speak to the senior leader and see what she thinks. Thank you x

If at all possible, it may help to avoid nappies whilst out as well - otherwise could potentially be a bit confusing for him. We have a travel potty and also a foldable toilet seat thing, and they’ve both been great as we’ve been able to get rid of the nappies completely (well, we still use them at night currently although he does seem to be relatively consistently dry!). I think possibly otherwise they find it confusing as sometimes they’re fine to go wherever and others they’re expected to go only on the potty/toilet. That being said - I have heard others say they used nappies whilst out and about and didn’t have any issues with confusion so I’d say it’s personal preference and whatever works best for you. But maybe try without pants for a bit if you decide to continue with nappies whilst out, as that may be different enough for him to not get confused?
