Breastfeeding on one side

I was expressing for 3 weeks and giving baby through bottles. He is now able to latch using nipple shields but sometimes only drinks from one side? I think I have an over supply due to the expressing, but not sure if I should be 'forcing' him to take both sides each feed? He's 5 weeks.

I’ve only ever fed on one side (occasionally baby will have both) I just alternate boobs each feed. It’s absolutely fine to just feed from one side each time x

Thank you ❤️ lactation consultant said to offer both breasts each feed but I'm not finding his to be working as he prefers to drink from one and then fall asleep

@Victoria it’s good practice to offer both sides, but it sounds like you’re doing that! If they won’t take it, that’s fine, you’ve given them the option 😊

I do the same as Jessica, my baby is tongue tied and waiting to have it sorted, I have to use shields (although am able to take off mid feed for a bit to get a bit of a latch) so it’s easier for me and baby to feed from one side, however I alternate sides every feed

My little boy (7weeks) only takes one side at a time. Rarely takes both. He’s either fallen asleep or is just content after feeding on one side.

I also alternate sides each feed, except for the rare occasion that my boy is super hungry in the morning and has a two boob breakfast

I express but also change between boobs each feed x

One of the midwives told me that babies do often have a preferred boob just like they probably have a preferred side they turn their head etc. I defo have one boob that produces more than the other - but offer both (sometimes the non favourite does ok) and pump both.

Thank you so much this is all really reassuring 🙏

I’m also using nipple shields and my little girl had her tongue tie snipped over a week ago, she’s done a couple of feeds without but savaged my nips so the shields are staying for now whilst we figure it out! Midwives and friends have said some people just keep shields forever and that’s all fine too. X
